Societies
At any one time there are about fifty societies and clubs in existence, catering for a wide range of interests and largely run by boys.
Societies tend to come and go, of course, depending on the special enthusiasms of the masters and boys in the school at the time, but many have been in existence for years and years. Those in existence at present include: African, Agricultural, Alexander Cozens (Art), Amnesty Group, Architectual, Astronomy, Bridge Club, Caledonian (Scottish dancing), Cheese, Chess Club, Classical, Cosmopolitan, Debating, Design, Essay, Entrepreneurship, Film, Geographical, Henry Fielding, Hispanic, History, Indus, Keynes (Economics), Law, Literary, Lower Boy Classical, Lower Boy Debating, Lower Boy History, Management, Mathematical, Medical, Middle Eastern, Model United Nations, Modern Languages, Musical, Newman (Catholic), Oriental, Orwell (Left-wing), Simeon (Christian), Parry (Music), Photographic, Political, Praed (Poetry), Rock, Rous (Equestrian), Scientific, Shelley (Radical), Slavonic, Sports, Theatre, Wellington (Military), Wine and Wotton’s (Philosophy).
Meetings are usually held after Supper. Some of these (The Scientific Society, for instance) are open to boys of all ages, others (The Political Society, for instance) only to senior boys, and others (The Lower Boy Classical Society, for instance) only to junior boys.
Recent speakers have included Ken Livingstone (Political), Evan Davis (Keynes), Henry Olonga (Simeon), Omid Djalili (Middle Eastern), Professor Germaine Greer (Literary), John McCririck (Rous), Levi Roots (Entrepreneurship), Professor Lord Ara Darzi (Medical), Professor Roger Scruton (Wotton's), Sir Gulam Noon (Indus) and Professor Richard Dawkins (Scientific).
