On Wednesday 2 October, the Law Society had the privilege of hosting Alex Harford OE for a highly insightful presentation on his career in commercial law. Mr Harford, currently a lawyer at Allen & Overy Sherman, one of the UK’s top five law firms, shared his extensive knowledge and personal experiences as a City lawyer. His talk covered various aspects of commercial law, including the diverse branches within the field and the multitude of opportunities available in this sector. Drawing on his first-hand experience, Mr Harford provided us with a comprehensive understanding of the realities and demands of working in a prestigious law firm, offering valuable insights for aspiring lawyers interested in pursuing a career in commercial law.
Mr Harford began his talk by outlining the key differences between solicitors and barristers, engaging the audience by encouraging us to guess which of the two professionals typically perform certain roles. One of the most compelling insights he shared was the distinction in how solicitors and barristers approach legal regulations. Solicitors, due to the nature of their work, often do not need to refer to established legal rules as frequently as barristers do. Instead, solicitors frequently create their own contracts and establish mutually binding agreements, particularly when dealing with corporate clients.
In contrast, barristers tend to maintain a more rigorous understanding and application of established legal statutes, given the nature of their practice. Mr Harford proceeded to explain the various pathways to becoming a solicitor, drawing from his own experience. He recounted his academic journey, having studied law at Bristol University, and shared how he was subsequently hired by Allen & Overy Sherman, where he has now worked for the past five years.
Mr Harford’s presentation to the Law Society was both enlightening and thought-provoking, offering a rare glimpse into the world of commercial law from the perspective of an experienced City lawyer. Mr Harford’s insights not only clarified the nuances of legal practice but also underscored the diverse opportunities available within the field of commercial law. For aspiring lawyers, his talk served as both inspiration and a practical roadmap, highlighting the dedication and knowledge required to succeed in such a competitive and demanding profession.
