It is with great sadness that Eton learnt of the death of Charles Gerald John, 8th Earl Cadogan KBE DL, businessman and philanthropist. We offer our deepest sympathy and condolences to his family and friends. Lord Cadogan passed away peacefully on 11 June 2023 at his home in Chelsea.

Lord Cadogan led a full, active life which included serving in the First Battalion of the Coldstream Guards in Germany, a long tenure at Schroders and, then, assuming a crucial role in the family business, the Cadogan Estate. He was also an Old Etonian and generous supporter of the School, who had a greatly valued role in the School community.

The Provost, Lord Waldegrave of North Hill, paid tribute to him, “Charles Cadogan was a great friend to Eton, and a major benefactor of the programme to improve our Rackets facilities, which is now under way. He will be very much missed by everyone at Eton, where he had a tremendous career as a sportsman, being, uniquely for the 20th century, Keeper of both the Field and Rackets.”
